Good times and good movies

Bringing my computer back with me was a good ide. They got a wireless connection here so I can do some surfing and keeping in touch with the people back home on what little spare time I have. Also I can watch movies. One of the guys in my room brought some DVDs with him so the past few evenings when we've gotten off duty we've been watching movies.

I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry was a hillarious and really good movie. Funny, well acted and with some serious undertones and messages. Cool film, very recommendable.

The other movie we watched, Shooter, was also quite good. Funny thing about films with military themes are that after a few weeks here in basic training you spot inaccuracies, mistakes etc. more easy. However, factual accuracies and realism is also easier to spot. Never the less, this was a good thriller/action. Nice story, but you could see a lot of it coming, but still very much enjoyable. Recommended!

We're al having a great time watching movies in our room altough it's just on a small computer screen. We probablu won't be watching any movies tonight though. A day of intense hand to hand combat training kind of exhaused us all.

In the army now

I've tried blogging earlier, but wasn't able to log in on the blog using any of the computers on base for some reason. Anyway, I'm currently home so I'm taking the time to write a few words.

Now after a 10 hour train ride I came home this morning. Tomorrow morning, less then 24 hours later I'll be back on the train on my way back to base. Not much of a weekend. The past few weeks have ben interesting though. I've just started basic training and realized I'm not in the physical shape I wish I was, but I'm working on it. I'm learning new stuff like shooting, camping and dressing according to conditions. Also spending a lot of time daily on making beds, washing and cleaning closets. Not exactly what one would expect to do in the army, right? Then there is the whole uniform, saluting, drilling and stuff. All together a whole lot of new stuff to learn.

Now there are a couple of things I've noticed so far. First off army life is not like in the movies. It's actually rather boring compared. Somebody should make a reality series about basic training. It would be perfect conditions. 8 total strangers are now to live together in one room and share everything. Bossed around by a total stranger almost your own age. Some will be discharged, some will be transferred. Physical and mentally challenging in every way. Tasks and missions will require cooperation, yet you need to be able to stand alone. If you want to be in a reality series without being on TV, join the army.

Army life isn't easy. However, most of the times it's ok. The guys at my room and in my platoon are really a great bunch and that's a lot. But then there are times I find myself demotivated and thinking 'what the hell am I doing here?'. Still you just keep going because you don't have a choise. A lot is expected from you. I only hope I'll live up to those expectations. I sure will do my best.

My goodbyes

Just wanted to say I probably won't be writing much from now on. I admit my blogging has been infrequent lately, but from now on I know it will be.

The reason is conscription and so tomorrow morning I leave for basic training and I'll most likely be spending the next year in service of my country. Not that I really mind, though. I've still not decided on further education so this year, in addition to learning new skills and making new friends, will give me some time to think. Not to mention other great film makers like Oliver Stone for instance come with an army background. So it can't be that bad.

Now, I'll try to blog if there's anything blogworthy going on, but I can't guarantee anything.

So for now, Goodbye!

Swarmed

I had the pleasure of watching a bad movie today. It was called Swarmed and the story was about a small town under attack by a mutant killer wasp. Now, I must confess the plot isn't all bad. Maybe if you dropped the mutant part and other studd you could've at least have a mediocre film.

For the most parts bad acting, ok, but cheap looking CGI and kind of cheap sounding, but ok music, just isn't enough. And then there is the obvious flaws in the script. In stead of going on in detail, let me just sum it all up by an example, a scene that says all needed to be said about this movie.

Picture if you will; The mayor's aid find's the mayor dead from being stung in the eye. Of course she has to kill the wasp and somehow the writer figures a shotgun is a reasonable weapond of choise. Who the heck get's the idea to have a character try to kill a wasp with a shotgun?! And succeed!

I can see entertainment in a lot of movies, but this is an avoid-at-all-cost-movie!

24th December

And so it's yet again finally Christmas! This is a film I've been saving, because it's quite a gem. It's a film from the early 90's by, a then, unkown film maker. I first saw it on a DVD of this, now famous film maker's, movies.

The story is about a girl and her annoying older brother. After vandalizing her doll and tripping her over, the fall to her head results in special powers. So now it's payback time...

A very visual film witch tells a lot with the pictures. Neat use of camera and basic special effects results in a wacky and lovable film.

Bedhead

And a merry Christmas to you all!
